10/09/13 – The women's soccer team pushed #7 Davenport to the limit before falling to the Panthers 2-1 in double overtime. The victory improved Davenport's record to 4-0 in the WHAC and to 11-1 overall, while the Saints fell to 7-3 on the season and to 3-1 in league play. Aquinas currently sits in third place in the WHAC standings with three weeks to play in the regular season.
The headline game of the week in conference play lived up to the hype. The cross-town rivals were pitted in a hard fought, entertaining match that lasted two overtimes. The Panthers, who are currently ranked seventh in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll, scored first on a goal by Lizzie Paul in the 80th minute of play. Paul's 12th goal of the season seemed to be enough to carry the Panthers to victory.
Coach Fales' crew refused to wave the white flag and continued to attack the Davenport zone during the last ten minutes of the match. The Saints finally broke through with :45 seconds to play as Maggie Keiffer tied the score at one. Keiffer's second goal of the season broke Davenport's 555 minute shutout streak. Elizabeth Vaughan, the team's leading scoring, was credited with the assist on the late goal.
The first overtime came and went with neither team finding the golden goal. The two teams perched atop of the WHAC standings would play ten more minutes to determine a potential winner.
The game winner came off the foot of Davenport's Lizzie Paul who struck for her second of the game and her 13th of the season at 103:31 mark. Michelle Marcus (2 saves) was credited with the victory in net for the Panthers, while Aquinas' Molly O'Connor notched seven saves in defeat.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday with another key WHAC showdown with Cornerstone (7-3-1, 3-0-1). The game will be played at Cornerstone starting at 4:30 p.m.
