10/09/13 – The women's volleyball team defeated Concordia in straight sets in a match played at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory improved the Saints record to 9-5 on the season and to 4-3 in league play, while the Cardinals fell to 0-6 in the WHAC and to 12-15 overall. The Saints remain in seventh place in the league standings with the Davenport Invitational looming this weekend.
After surrendering the first seven points of the match, the Saints woke up and had to claw their way to a first set victory (25-21). The second set did not get any easier, but the Saints prevailed in front of their home crowd to the tune of 25-23. By the third set the Saints attack had worn down the Cardinals defense. Aquinas struck for a .400 hitting percentage en route to the 25-8 set three win.
Aquinas' offense was keyed by the ten kill outburst from Sierra VanTil. The combination of Nicci Thomas and Brooke Wieland combined for 27 assists, while Anna Fencil led the team in digs with a baker's dozen.
Aquinas will now face Ashford, Grace, Huntington and Rochester in a two day tournament contested at Davenport over the weekend.
