10/20/13 – The men's soccer team traveled to Fort Wayne and defeated Indiana Tech 4-3 on Senior Day at Warrior Field. The Saints improved to 12-3 overall and to 4-3 in league play, while the Warriors fell to 2-4 in the WHAC and to 8-5-1 on the season. The Saints are now positioned in a two-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with Marygrove (9-5, 4-3 WHAC). The two teams will meet on Wednesday at the AQ Athletic Field with major conference tournament implications at stake.
For the second match in a row the Saints offensive production rose to the forefront to net a conference victory. Aldony Mendez, the Saints leading scoring, scored a goal in the 5th minute of play to kick start the attack. The chip shot netted Mendez his 13th goal of the season. The Warriors found the equalizer via a penalty kick at the 21:24 mark of the first half. Robbie Kiernan converted the PK to knot the score at one. The match appeared to be headed to the half even, but a Peter Brandenburg header found the back of the net with 1:25 on the first half scoreboard. Brandenburg's third score of the season was set up by Michael Gagnon, who was credited with his sixth assist of his senior season.
The Saints extended their advantage to 4-1 on two second half goals by Mendez. Aldony netted scores in the 57th and 66th minute of play to complete his second hat trick of the year. The eventual game winner at the 65:55 mark of the game was assisted on by Jonathan Spencer, who now has 18 points on the season. Mendez is currently tied for the conference lead in points (36) and ranks second in goals scored with (16). The Warriors made things interesting as goals by Bernard Wilson and Adam Knight brought Tech within one goal, but was not enough as the Saints prevailed 4-3.
Craig Demshuk was credited the victory as he was notched two saves, while Reece Richardson stopped five shots on goal in defeat. The Saints out shot the Warriors 16-6.
