10/24/2013 – The men's soccer team continued to light up the scoreboard as the Saints defeated Marygrove by the score of 4-0. The Saints improved to 13-3 overall and to 5-3 in WHAC play, while the Mustangs fell to 4-4 in the conference and to 9-6 on the season. Aquinas currently sits in third place in the WHAC standings with two league matches remaining.
The Saints, who notched their 13th victory of the season, matched their win total from the 2012 campaign. The Saints offense, which has rattled off 13 goals over the last three matches, continues to gain momentum as the conference tournament draws closer.
Michael Gagnon recorded an unassisted goal during the 24 minute of play to give the Saints the early 1-0 advantage. The eventual game winner was Gagnon's seventh goal of the season. A little over eight minutes later fellow senior, Johathan Spencer, added his eighth of the season to give the Saints a two goal lead. Mitch Torres tallied his fifth assist of the season on Spencer's goal.
Leading by two midway through the second half, Gagnon struck again. The senior from Grand Haven lifted the Saints to a three goal lead on his second goal of the game. Michael Weber was credited with the assist on Gagnon's goal. A little insurance was added in the 90th minute of play as Rico Padilla scored his first goal of the season to bring the final score to 4-0. Padilla's first goal in an Aquinas uniform was assisted on by Aldony Mendez.
Craig Demshuk, who currently is surrendering .84 goals a game, recorded two saves in the shutout. The Saints outshot Marygrove 20-8.
Aquinas will return to their home field on Saturday with a date with Siena Heights starting at 3 p.m.
