11/05/2010 – The women's basketball team was defeated by Olivet Nazarene at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center by the score of 106-77. The event marked the first regular season game for both squads. Even though the game resembled a track meet more than a basketball game, both teams came away with some positives and a few things to work on.
The "run and gun" style and "shift on the fly" substitutions from the Tigers gave them an early advantage. A three-point bucket by Miranda Geever gave Olivet a 43-22 lead at the 6:16 mark of the first half. The Saints weathered the storm and chipped away at the lead as the half came to a close. A 23-8 run brought the Saints within six at the halftime break (51-45).
Aquinas continued the charge in the second half as the Saints drew even on a Taelor Sanders two point make at the 16:33 mark. After trading baskets over the next few minutes, the Tigers made a decisive 18-4 run midway through the half to give themselves a little breathing room. Olivet Nazarene kept the pressure on the Saints and continued to pull away down the stretch. After the smoke cleared, the Tigers had defeated the Saints by the score of 106-77.
The Saints were paced on offense by Vicky VanDyke who scored 15 points. Taelor Sanders added 13, while Liza Flewelling and Lindsey Karpowicz both chipped in with ten. Clare Conway played well as she recorded six rebounds and six assists. Holly Schacht led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points.
The Saints will return to action on Monday when they travel to Mishawaka, Indiana to battle the Bethel Pilots.
