01/27/2014 – The men's hockey team continued their streak of strong performances with a two game weekend sweep of Michigan State University. On Friday night before a packed house at “the Griff”, the Saints doubled up the Spartans by the score of 6–3. Freshman Corey Giffel and senior Hugh Ingalls each tallied a pair of goals, while senior Jimmy McDonagh and sophomore Doug Zalenka each chipped in a goal and an assist. Defensively the Saints were led by sophomore Kyle Jansens with two assists on the night. Freshman goaltender Sean Schmeiser only surrendered three goals on 50 shot attempts by the Spartans.
On Sunday afternoon the Saints traveled to Munn Arena on the campus of Michigan State and proved that Friday’s win was no fluke. The Saints battled their way to another road victory by the score of 5 – 2. In this contest the scoring was evenly distributed as five different players scored for the Saints. Senior captain Greg Baranyai, sophomore defenseman Brenden Giffel, junior Matt Krzykwa, sophomore Carson Miller, and senior Brent Steele all recorded single goals, while Jimmy McDonagh and Corey Giffel each recorded three assists. Once again Sean Schmeiser was up to the task facing 42 Spartan shots and allowing only two goals. The Saints have now won six out of their last seven games and have not lost in regulation time since December 13.
The Saints will return to the ice with a home-and-home series with Grand Valley State (17-14, 4-7 MCHA West) this weekend.
