01/30/2014 – The men's basketball team used a 23-0 run in the first half to key a 35-point victory over their guests from Marygrove. The win improved the Saints record to 7-7 in the WHAC and to 10-12 on the season, while the Mustangs fell to 2-21 overall and to 1-14 in league play. The Saints, who are entering the final stretch of the regular season, currently reside in seventh place in the WHAC standings.
The Saints used a balanced attack that saw six Saints reach double figure scoring. Zac VanBeek paced the attack with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Aquinas shot 51% from the field compared to 30% for Marygrove. Luke Sorenson, a transfer from Davenport, added a spark late as he scored a career high 16 points in nine minutes of play.
Seniors Austin Semple, Brett Pfahler and Kolin Kazen combined to score 37 points, while Joe Ferrici added ten points and eight rebounds.
The Saints will now travel to Lima, Ohio to battle Northwestern Ohio (18-5, 11-4 WHAC) in a key WHAC showdown on Saturday. In their previous meeting the Racers defeated the Saints 78-76.
