11/09/2010 – The men's soccer team defeated Siena Heights 4-1 to earn a berth in the WHAC Championship on Saturday. Aquinas improves to 15-4 on the season, while Siena Heights concludes their season with a record 10-8-1.
Freshman Mitch Torres continued his fine freshman campaign as he notched his fourth goal of the season during the 16th minute of play. Ruben Ornelas-Luna was responsible for the assist on Torres goal. Later in the half Jeovani Pantoja extended the lead with a goal of his own in the 29th minute. Sophomore, Casey Higgason, was credited with the assist on Pantoja's 16th goal of the season.
Siena Heights' Josh Pascarella sliced the deficit in half as he struck for a goal two minutes into the second half. The Saints quickly answered, as Torres scored his second goal of the game in the 48th minute. Both Michael Gagnon and Ruben Ornelas-Luna were given assists on Torres goal. Later in the half Michael Vaughan added a penalty kick for insurance and subsequently ended the scoring for the two squads.
Jesse Guevara-Lehker ran his record to 12-4 on the season as he recorded ten saves in goal for the Saints. Currently Guevara-Lehker is surrendering only 1.16 goals per game.
Aquinas will now host the winner of the Davenport/Cornerstone game on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a ticket to the NAIA National Championships on the line.
