02/16/2014 – The women's basketball team notched their 20th victory of the season with a road win at Madonna 90-74. The Saints improved to 13-7 in the WHAC and to 20-7 overall, while the Crusaders fell to 12-15 on the season and to 10-10 in conference play. The Saints remain tied for fourth in the league standings with two regular season games to play.
The Saints, who defeated the Crusaders by four points back in January, completed the season sweep at the Activities Center in Livonia. Aquinas, who spoiled "Senior Day" at Madonna, hit the 20 win plateau for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Saints have now won four of five and seem to be peaking with the start of the WHAC Tournament looming next week.
The Saints started quickly and never looked back as Aquinas held the lead for all but two minutes of the contest. Taelor Sanders blitzed the Crusaders with 14 first half points to give Coach Nash's crew a 38-33 lead at the half.
Sanders' big day continued in the second half as she willed the Saints to the 16-point victory. Taelor stuffed the stat sheet with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Allison Heberlein contributed a double-double as she recorded 16 points and eleven rebounds. The Saints also received big games from seniors Carly Bardwell (14 points) and Marisa Marx (12 points).
The Saints will return to action on Wednesday as they travel across town to battle the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone (19-8, 14-6 WHAC). The game has major tournament implications as the winner will put a stranglehold on the #3 seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament.
