02/20/2014 – The women's basketball team was defeated by the Golden Eagles on the campus of Cornerstone University 64-49. The victory improved the Golden Eagles record to 20-8 on the season and to 15-6 in league play, while the Saints fall to 13-8 in the WHAC and to a matching 20-8 record overall. The Saints now find themselves tied for fifth in the league standings with one game to play.
The Saints, who defeated Cornerstone two weeks ago, were looking for the season sweep and a possible top four seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament. Aquinas, who owns a 12-2 mark at home, knew home court in the first round would be key.
The two teams exchanged sparring blows for the first ten minutes with neither team gaining an advantage. With the score tied at 14, the Golden Eagles used a 13-2 run over a six minute stretch to give themselves some breathing room. The spurt would enable Cornerstone to take a 29-22 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Saints, who experienced shooting woes most of the night, could never slice the deficit below seven. Cornerstone would eventually stretch the lead to as many as 20 as four Golden Eagles reached double figures. Allison Heberlein paced the Saints attack with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Aquinas will close the regular season with a contest at Lourdes (6-22, 4-17 WHAC) on Saturday at Noon. The game will be played at Owens Community College
