11/12/2010 – The men's basketball team earned their first win of the year as Aquinas defeated Indiana Wesleyan 64-63. The win improves the Saints record to 1-2 on the season, while the Wildcats record falls to 3-2. Both teams were taking part in the WHAC/MCC Challenge that also saw Cornerstone defeat Spring Arbor in the first game of the evening 79-56. This year's games are being played on Aquinas' campus at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
In tonight's action the Saints sprinted out to an early 14-1 advantage over the Wildcats. Aquinas' lead buoyed between eight and 14 points the rest of the half thanks in part to 61% shooting. The Saints maintained the lead and claimed a 33-23 cushion heading to the halftime locker room.
Indiana Wesleyan would not go away as they slowly chipped away into the Saints lead. Aquinas bent, but never broke and continued to keep the Wildcats at bay as the game progressed. Indiana Wesleyan completed the comeback and finally claimed their first lead (61-60) on a two point make by Derrick Troyer with 17 seconds remaining in the contest. Damacious White answered with two free throws to reclaim the lead only to see the Wildcats respond with three seconds to go on a basket by Patrick Hopkins. The Saints found a way as Damacious White set up Zach Eddy who beat the buzzer and propelled the Saints to their first victory of the year.
Aquinas was led by Damacious White and Jamell Hatchett, who scored 18 and 16 respectively. Transer Eric Johnson played well in limited minutes off the bench as he scored nine points. Will Hubertz led the way for the Wildcats with 15 points. The Saints will return to action tomorrow as they host Spring Arbor at 3 p.m.
