04/17/2014 – The baseball team picked up a pair of one run victories over conference foe, Madonna, in a key WHAC doubleheader. Due to poor field conditions at both teams home fields, the games were contested at DeWitt Field on the campus of Cornerstone University. The wins improved the Saints record to 9-7 in the WHAC and to 17-13 overall, while the Crusaders fell to 20-19 on the season and to 7-11 in league play.
The Saints had to rally in the seventh inning of game one to even the score at four a piece. A two-run producing single by KJ Hartger was the key moment of the inning for Aquinas. A solid outing for starter Kaleb Ort ended in a no decision as the Lowell native went seven strong giving up four runs on eight hits. The Saints bullpen provided enough relief to give the Saints a chance to win the game in their final at bats. Kyle Orlowski's double down the left field line scored Jimmy McDonagh from second base to seal the 5-4 victory. Brendan Penny earned his third victory of the season as he recorded a scoreless ninth inning.
Round two saw a pitchers dual between Aquinas' David Foster and the Crusaders' Alex DeYonker. Both starters allowed one run each during their time on the hill. Foster tallied four strikeouts and gave up six base hits. With neither team settling the outcome in the necessary seven innings, the game went to extra innings. Mike DeClarke pitched two scoreless innings in the seventh and the eighth to set the Saints up for win. One hit and two errors later, Paul Woloszyk crossed home plate to give the Saints the 2-1 victory and the series sweep.
The Saints, with little rest, resumed play today as they stepped outside of conference for one game against Calvin College.
