05/01/2014 – The Aquinas College baseball team won a pair of key WHAC games against Indiana Tech yesterday in Fort Wayne. The wins improve the Saints' record to 12-12 in conference play and moved them into fourth place, a game ahead of Madonna. The Saints are 22-19 overall.
Aquinas trailed early in the opening game, falling behind 3-1 after three innings. A two-run 4th by the Saints tied things up, and a three-run 5th gave the Saints the lead. The Warriors rallied in the bottom of the 9th, but Kevin Schafer shut the door to give the Saints a 7-5 victory. Colin Brand and Greg Baranyai had three hits each for the Saints. Brand and catcher KJ Hartger each drove in two runs. Tyler Fults pitched five innings to earn the win for the Saints, while Schafer picked up the save.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring five runs in the first two innings. The lead grew to 8-0 before the Warriors scored a combined six runs in the 5th and 6th. Aquinas held on and completed the sweep with a 10-6 win. Kyle Orlowski had three hits and three RBI's to lead the way for the Saints. All three of Orlowski's hits were doubles. Brad Slis added two hits and Michael Priest drove in two. Brendan Penny struck out five while earning the win for the Saints.
The two teams met again this afternoon. First pitch for today's double-header is at 1:00 pm.
