12/01/2010 – The women's basketball team defeated Alma College by the score of 55-44. The Saints scored their second win in a row and improved to 3-6 on the season, while the Scots fall to 1-4 on the year.
The Saints, who begin league play on Saturday, soared out to an early advantage thanks in part to the fine first halves of Shelby Carter and Ann Marie Schumaker. Carter and Schmaker accounted for 22 of the 29 first half points scored by the Saints. At the 3:14 mark of the half, Aquinas held a 29-14 lead and was looking to run away with the victory. The Scots had other ideas as they went on a 14-0 run over the next ten plus minutes to cut the Saints lead to one.
Aquinas stayed calm and weathered the Scots run and methodically built the lead to as high as 17 in the waning moments of play. Shelby Carter capped off her best game in an Aquinas uniform as she contributed 16 points, six rebounds and four steals. Ann Marie Schmaker added 13 points and six rebounds.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday as the host newest WHAC opponent, Northwestern Ohio (6-4, 1-0), at 1 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
