01/12/2011 – The women's basketball team suffered a setback at the hands of Concordia University in WHAC action. The 62-48 victory for the Cardinals elevates their record to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in league play, while the Saints drop to 6-13 on the season and 3-3 in the WHAC.
Concordia, who appears to be a team on the rise in the WHAC, jumped all over the Saints early. The Cardinals established a 22-8 advantage ten minutes into the contest. Aquinas maintained its composure and responded with a 20-7 run over the next nine minutes to whittle the lead to one at 29-28. The first half concluded with Concordia holding a 35-30 lead over Aquinas.
The first ten minutes of the second half saw both squads playing a tight game with neither team establishing dominance. The final ten minutes were another story as the Saints could only muster five points over the final 10:37 of the contest. Aquinas shot 29% from the field and 44% from the free throw line in the second half.
The Cardinals were paced by a balanced attack that saw Kelly Cieslak and Kortni Elsworth score twelve points apiece. The Saints were led by Shelby Carter who recorded ten points.
The Saint will return to action on Saturday as they will host #1 ranked Davenport (20-0, 6-0 WHAC)at 1 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
