01/22/2011 – Dustin Heiler headlined the performances for the Saints at the Mike Lints Open hosted by Grand Valley State, as he broke the school record in the 800M. Dustin's time of 1:53.47 not only breaks Nick Thelen's previous mark, but also automatically qualifies Dustin for the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Currently Heiler's time is the fastest in the NAIA to date this season. The Saints also saw Nick Thelen (1:54.87) automatically qualify for Nationals and Charles Irmen (1:56.09) provisionally qualify in the 800 meters.
Matching Heiler's first place performance was Devin Lea in the men's 5000M. Devin outlasted the field of 45 to walk away with first place in a time of 15:18.
On the women's side, Rachael Steil turned in a great performance in the women's invitational 3000 as she placed second in an ultra competitive field. Steil's time of 9:59.16 is currently the second fastest time in the country and ranks her second on Aquinas' All-Time List behind Carly Plank. Aquinas also saw Samantha Rinkus turn in a fine performance in the 5000M as she provisionally qualified for Nationals with a time of 18:23.44. Rinkus' time is the fourth fastest indoor 5000M in Aquinas history.
The Saints will return to action next Friday as the Saints travel to Calvin College to compete in a quadrangular hosted by the Knights.
