Fast Start Not Enough Against Davenport

02/17/2011 – The women's basketball team played well against the #1 team in the land, but ran out of steam late against the Panthers. The victory improves Davenport's record to 25-0 on the season and 15-0 in the WHAC, while the Saints fall to 9-20 on the year and are now 5-10 in league play.

An almost flawless first half saw the Saints build their lead to as many as seven versus the #1 rated Panthers from Davenport. Aquinas outshot Davenport (61%-41%) during the first half and also connected on all seven of their free throw attempts. The Panthers closed the half on an 11-6 run to take a three point lead (39-36) into the locker room.

Aquinas continued to hang around in the second half as Clare Conway's layup with thirteen minutes to play brought the Saints to within four at 54-50. Following Conway's make, Davenport went on to score 23 of the next 30 points to give themselves some breathing room and the Panthers would eventually hold on to the victory 83-62.

Vicky VanDyke led the gutsy effort with a team high 14 points and ten rebounds. Lindsay Karpowicz contributed eleven points in a starting role, while fellow front court mate Shelby Carter chipped in with ten points.

The Saints will conclude their regular season with a road game at Madonna (10-14, 6-9) on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
