09/07/2010 – After weeks of practice Coach Rawles and the Saints volleyball team were finally able to compete in some real live matches. The University of Taylor was the location as some of the NAIA's best from the Midwest took part in the weekend tournament.
The Saints earned their first victory of the year in their first match as the Saints downed Marian three sets to one. Mollie Lounds led the Saints with 17 kills and five blocks, while Katie Vander Meer posted 43 assists. The second match on Friday pitted the Saints versus Malone University. The two teams participated in a marathon match that saw the Pioneers win the fifth and decisive set 15-12. Chelsea Phillips delivered 20 kills for the Saints, while Jessica Bredeweg and Jessica Curtis both recorded 18 digs. Captain Katie Vander Meer was credited with 43 assists for the second game in a row.
Saturday's action saw the Saints matched up with two of the top twenty teams in the NAIA coach's poll. Aquinas was defeated by both #19 Shawnee State (3-1) and tournament host #10 Taylor (3-0). Once again upperclassman Jessica Curtis, Chelsea Phillips, Mollie Lounds and Katie Vander Meer led the attack for the Saints.
The Saints concluded the weekend with a 1-3 record and will open WHAC play on Thursday as Aquinas travels to Adrian to tangle with the Saints from Siena.
