04/03/2011 – The men's and women's track teams began their outdoor season at Houseman Field on Saturday, as the Saints hosted the Grand Rapids Open. The Saints racked up six first place finishes and saw three athletes hit national qualifying marks.
Emily Smith's toss of 149-6 in the discus earned her first place accolades and automatically qualified the sophomore for the outdoor championships. Smith's mark of 149-6 also moved her into fourth on the Saints All-Time List for discus. Aquinas also had great performances in the men's 800 meters. Nick Thelen (1:54.04) and Dustin Heiler (1:54.40) both hit the provisional qualifying times as they placed 1st and 3rd respectively. Thelen's time is the second fastest time in school history, while Heiler ranks #4 all-time.
First place performances were also turned in by the women's 4x200 meter relay, Rachael Steil (5000M), Joordan Hall (100M) and Devin Lea (5000M). Other highlights included Justin Marquardt's performance in the shot put (48-2) which places him third all-time at Aquinas. Also the pole vault duo of Alicia Dorko (8-10) and Emily Sarros (8-2) recorded the third and fourth highest vaults ever.
The Saints will return to action next Saturday as Aquinas travels to Adrian to compete in the All-American Invitational.
