04/26/2011 – The weather finally cooperated to allow the women's softball team to host a home doubleheader. Fuller Park, the Saints new home, was the site of yesterdays WHAC matchup between Aquinas and Indiana Tech. The Warriors won both games to improve their record to 30-10 on the season and 10-1 in league play. Aquinas fell to 24-16 on the year and 7-9 in the WHAC with the losses.
Aquinas and Indiana Tech traded first inning runs in the first half of the doubleheader. The next person to cross the plate would not be until the top of the eighth when Jenn Anderson was forced home on a bases loaded walk to give the Warriors the eventual game winner (2-1). Carlie Giarmo was credited with the loss (9-7) despite giving up only two runs and six hits. Giarmo's counterpart Sam Berrios (11-3) kept the Saints in check as she allowed one run and seven hits in eight innings of work. Both teams missed golden opportunities as ten base runners were stranded on each side.
The Saints jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second game of the doubleheader. Aquinas struck for three runs and four hits in the second inning. Heidi Holmes drove in two with a single to left, while Sadie Stowell's single drove home Jill Wagner. The lead was erased in the top half of the third as Indiana Tech responded with four of their own. The big blow came when Martika Arnstead connected on an Ashley White offering and hit a three run homer over the left center fence. Aquinas tied the score in the bottom half of the third on a Becky Lesko single. The Warriors countered with three more in the fifth to close out the scoring and complete the sweep of the Saints.
Aquinas will host Cornerstone on Wednesday at Fuller Park starting at 4 p.m.
