05/06/2011 – The women's softball team won two of three contests to stay alive for the WHAC Championship. The Saints will resume competition today with a 1 p.m. date with Indiana Tech in Battle Creek.
The Saints started their day with a 3-2 extra inning victory over Cornerstone. Torie Lowe's bases loaded single in the eighth broke the 2-2 tie. Lowe also accounted for the two runs in the fourth inning as she doubled to left. Carlie Giarmo picked up the win as she scattered six hits and allowed two runs in eight innings of work.
Aquinas was then matched up against regular season champion, Davenport, in the second game of the day. Ashley White and Sam Cole were locked in a pitching duel that did not receive closure until the bottom of the ninth inning. A Liz Veltman walk off home run in the ninth propelled the Panthers to the 2-1 victory. White allowed two run and nine hits in eight and a third innings of work.
Facing elimination the Saints responded and delivered the knockout blow to Concordia 11-5. Aquinas kept the base pads busy as the Saints accumulated 15 hits and were aided by eight Concordia errors. Carlie Giarmo earned her second victory of the day as she allowed four earned runs in eight innings of work. Offensively the Saints were led by All-WHAC performer Renae Tubergen, who went 4-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
