09/01/2011 – The men's soccer team was defeated by #25 St. Xavier in overtime by the score of 2-1. The win improves the Cougars record to 1-1 on the season, while the Saints record falls to 1-1 on the year.
St. Xavier, who was coming off a season opening defeat to Bethel, was in search of their first win of the 2011 season. Meanwhile the Saints, who were defeated by the Cougars 1-0 in 2010, were looking to open the season with two consecutive wins. The Aquinas faithful were treated to a very competitive contest by two well respected programs.
The Cougars struck first in the 33rd minute as Luis Medina scored on a set up by Adrian Guzman. The one goal advantage held until the 85th minute when the Saints finally broke through and knotted the game up at one a piece. Mitch Torres converted Aquinas' first shot on goal into a goal to force an overtime period. St. Xavier's Kyle Breitenbach delivered the game winner 5:18 into the extra session. The Cougars keeper, Kyle Held, was credited with three saves and the victory, while Aquinas' Jesse Guevara-Lehker suffered the loss and notched four saves.
The Saints will return to action this weekend in Fort Wayne, Indiana as Aquinas will play Huntington (0-2) and St. Francis (1-1).
