09/04/2011 – The women's volleyball team returned home after winning three out of four matches at the Cardinal Stritch Invitational. The Saints improved their overall mark to 6-5 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center when they entertain UI Northwest at 6 p.m.
Aquinas opened the tournament with a match-up against IU Northwest, a team they had defeated two days earlier. The Saints made quick work of the Red Hawks (25-14, 25-16 and 25-21). Chelsea Phillips led the attack with 13 kills and four blocks. The senior was supported by Nicci Thomas' 19 assists and the nine digs by Heather Engle. Aquinas closed out Friday night with another three set victory over Mount Marty (25-16, 25-18 and 25-20). The threesome of Emily Rice, Elle Sturgell and Phillips all recorded seven kills a piece against the Lancers. Thomas paced Aquinas with 14 assists, while Amy VonKronenberger led the Saints with ten digs.
The Saints strung their third win in a row together on Saturday morning as Aquinas defeated Huntington in four sets (25-18, 18-25, 25-13 and 25-18). The duo of MacKenzie Kolstad and Chelsea Phillips proved to be to much as they both recorded ten kills against the Foresters. Rachel Sprenger, a freshman from West Catholic, led the Saints with 17 assists, while senior Sarah LeClair notched 18 digs. The Saints finally suffered defeat in the final match of the weekend to host Cardinal Stritch. The Wolves defeated the Saints in a highly competitive four set match (25-23, 25-22, 24-26 and 25-19). Kolstad and Allison Griffiths led Aquinas in kills with eleven a piece. Nicci Thomas was credited with 19 assists, while Sarah LeClair was responsible for 13 digs.
