Men's Soccer Extends Winning Streak to Four

09/10/2011 – The men's soccer team picked up wins at Walsh and Malone over the weekend to push their record to 5-1 on the season. Aquinas will look to extend their winning streak with home games versus Lawrence Tech and Cardinal Stritch this week.

On Friday night in Canton the Saints dealt the Cavilers their first lost of the season. Aquinas started the scoring in the last minute of the first half as Jonathan Spencer beat the clock on a set up by Mitch Torres. Walsh evened the score in the 48th minute as Ben Truax scored on a penalty kick (hand ball in the box). Regulation time had ended and a pair of one's were still lite on the scoreboard so the two teams went into an overtime period. Aquinas received the game winner by Heath Somers in the 97th minute to secure the Saints second consecutive overtime victory.

The Saints finished off their tour of former NAIA schools in Canton, Ohio today with a win versus Malone. Aquinas outlasted the Pioneers by a count of 3-2. Billy Cremeans scored his fourth goal of the season to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead. Michael Gagnon added to the advantage during the 27th minute as his header found the back of the net. Tyler Fischer and Heath Somers were credited with Aquinas' first half scores. A late miscue by the Saints off a corner kick allowed Malone to draw within one goal at the half. Sophomore Michael Gagnon delivered his second goal of the game to reestablish the Saints two goal lead during the 55th minute of play. Tyler Fisher recorded the assist on Gagnon's second goal of the game. A converted penalty kick by Malone's Rubem Miranda in the 66th minute brought the Pioneers within one. The Saints defense stiffened and Jesse Guevara-Lehker's play in net allowed the Saints to hold their advantage and claim the victory.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday with a home contest versus Lawrence Tech at 4 p.m.
