09/17/2011 – The women's volleyball team extended their winning streak to six matches with a pair of victories over Olivet and a win against St. Francis. The Saints overall record stands at 12-5, while their conference record is a perfect 1-0.
The Saints made quick work of the Comets defeating them in three sets (25-13, 25-8 and 25-12). Chelsea Phillips continued her fine play leading the Saints with 17 kills on 19 attempts (.895). Nicci Thomas directed the victory with 32 assists, while Aquinas' defense was keyed by Amy VonKronenberger's 17 digs.
Aquinas and St. Francis were matched up in the first game at Olivet on Saturday. After losing the first set, the Saints stormed back to capture the final three sets (20-25, 25-15, 25-21 and 25-21). Aquinas' duo of Jackie Overton and Allison Griffiths had "a block party" versus the Cougars as they both recorded eight blocks a piece. Phillips once again led the offensive attack with 18 kills, while Nicci Thomas accounted for 46 assists. The school record holder in career digs, Sarah LeClair, led the Saints with 22 digs.
The finals match of the day on Saturday completed the home and home series versus Olivet. Different day, but the same result as Aquinas swept the Comets in three (25-16, 25-13 and 25-15). Allison Griffiths and Chelsea Phillips paced the offensive attack with ten kills a piece, while Nicci Thomas notched 32 assists. Senior Jessica Curtis led the Saints with ten digs.
Aquinas will return to action on Saturday night when the Saints will host Cornerstone (12-1, 1-0 WHAC) at 6 p.m. A "white out" has been planned to celebrate "Aquinas Homecoming 2011".
