10/30/2011 – The women's volleyball team scored four victories over the weekend as they were crowned co-champs of the AQ/CU Crossover. Aquinas' overall record now stands at 24-10 with the championship portion of their schedule looming.
The Saints made quick work of Marian on Friday afternoon as Aquinas downed the Knights in three sets (25-21, 25-22, and 25-23). The Saints were led by freshman Allison Griffiths who recorded 14 kills and Jessica Bredeweg who notched 20 assists. Sarah LeClair anchored the defense with twenty six digs. Aquinas continued its strong play in the night cap as the Saints disposed of Robert Morris in three (25-13, 25-10, and 25-16). Chelsea Phillips led the Saints with seven kills and on the final point of set one Phillips became the all-time kills leader at Aquinas. Phillips' 1,327 kill of her career over took former teammate Mollie Lounds' previous record. Nicci Thomas led the Saints with eleven assists, while MacKenzie Kolstad accounted for seven digs.
Aquinas returned to the court early Saturday morning with a date with Daemen College of New York. The Saints and Wildcats were pitted in a close match between two equally talented teams. The Saints found a way and escaped with a four set win (25-23, 25-19, 24-26, and 25-23). Phillips, who was on an emotional high from the record, led the Saints with 18 kills. Jessica Bredeweg accounted for 28 assists, while Sarah LeClair led the Saints with 32 kills. Aquinas finished the tournament with a four set win over the Fighting Saints of St. Francis (25-19, 16-25, 25-23, and 25-21). Jessica Curtis supplied the offense with 14 kills, while fellow senior Sarah LeClair recorded 30 digs. Jessica Bredeweg and Nicci Thomas combined for the 37 assists.
The Saints will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference match against Goshen (15-14) at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center at 5:30 p.m.
