11/02/2011 – The new look men's basketball team defeated Goshen College in their season opener 69-60. The Saints improved to 1-0 with the win, while the Maple Leafs fall to 0-1 with the setback.
The new season brings new hope for this group of Saints that mirrors Coach Hammer's knowledge and high desire for success. Trailing by ten with 2:27 to play in the first half the Saints found their way. An 8-2 run to close the half was followed by a 12-2 spurt to start half number two. The Saints initiated the 16 point swing in just over seven minutes. Aquinas' lead swelled to as many as 15 (54-39) at the 5:16 mark en route to their first victory of the year.
Tyler Moreland led four Saints in double figures with 16 points. Zach Eddy (14), Kevin Grant (11), and Brett Pfahler (10) all contributed to the balanced attack. Cole Moore recorded eight rebounds to lead Aquinas College, while Connor McCane contributed three steals and three assists. The Saints out shot the Maple Leafs 42%-38% and out rebounded Goshen 36-31.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday as they travel to play St. Francis (Ind.) (0-0) at 3 p.m.
