11/08/2011 – The men's basketball team lost a heart breaker to Bethel College 81-79. A bucket at the buzzer by Pilots guard, Matt Schauss, lifted Bethel to their second win of the year. Aquinas fell to 1-2 on the season with the setback.
The Saints built an early first half lead thanks in part to the hot shooting of Joe Powers. The transfer form Northwood ignited the Sturrus crowd with 17 points in the first half, including four makes from beyond the three point arc. The ten point advantage at the 12:23 mark quickly dissolved as the Pilots went on a 20-9 run over the next six minutes to take a one point advantage. The Saints withstood the attack and closed the half scoring 21 of the next 31 points.
Aquinas built the lead to 17 (65-48) with 14:35 to play on a two point make by Connor McCane, but failed to deliver the necessary knockout blow. The Pilots methodically narrowed the gap and found themselves down seven with 4:08 to play. Bethel held the Saints scoreless the remainder of the game and pulled ahead (81-79) as the final horn sounded.
Powers finished with a game high 23 points to lead Aquinas. Tyler Moreland and Cole Moore chipped in with thirteen and eleven points respectively. Senior Jake Shockey also played well as he contributed nine points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Zach Miller paced the Pilots with 19 points.
The Saints will return to action this weekend with dates against Spring Arbor (2-1) and #2 ranked Indiana Wesleyan (2-0) at the WHAC/MCC Challenge hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.
