11/12/2011 – The men's basketball team was defeated by Spring Arbor 71-63 in the opening game of the WHAC/MCC Challenge. The yearly tournament between the two conferences is being contested in Marion, Indiana on Indiana Wesleyan's campus.
The Saints suffered through a first half that saw them shoot 27% from the field. Spring Arbor built the lead to as many as 18 points during the half before taking a 35-20 lead into the locker room. Coach Hammer's crew continued to hustle and narrowed the margin to six late in the game. Aquinas would not get any closer however, as the Cougars escaped with a 71-63 victory. The Saints shooting did pick up as they connected on 16 of 25 field goal attempts in the second half. Spring Arbor improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Saints slip to 1-3 with the setback.
Cole Moore paced three Saints in double figures with 14 points. Joe Powers and Tyler Moreland chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively. Aquinas out rebounded the Cougars 33-20 with Jake Shockey responsible for eight of the them.
The Saints will now play host Indiana Wesleyan (3-0) today at 3 p.m.
