11/12/2011 – The women's basketball team evened their record at 2-2 with a 72-56 win at Goshen. The loss for the Maple Leafs was their fifth straight to start the season.
The Saints used a 22-3 spurt midway through the first half to open up a 19 point lead (29-10) on the home team. Aquinas expanded the lead to 22 points before settling for a 20 point cushion at the halftime break. The Maple Leafs made the necessary adjustments in the locker room and quickly scored the first 12 points of the half. With the lead sliced to eight, the Saints regrouped and relied on the defense to carry them the rest of the way. Aquinas' quick hands forced 34 Goshen turnovers. Freshman Chelsea Matley led the Saints with eight steals.
Taelor Sanders once again paced the Saints in the scoring department as she scored a game high 17 points. Sanders received plenty of support as Anne Marie Shumaker (12), Chelsea Matley (11), and Lindsey Karpowicz (10) all managed double figure scoring nights. Karpowicz also led Aquinas with eight rebounds.
Kaylee Hilliker led the way for the Maple Leafs scoring 13 points.
The Saints will return to action next weekend as Aquinas will host the Aquinas College Classic on Friday and Saturday.
