Pfahler's Big Night Leads Saints

11/27/2011 – The men's basketball team defeated Calvin College 69-63 in the second set of games at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic. The victory improved the Saints record to 3-6 on the season, while the Knight fell to 3-3 with the set back.

The Saints started slowly on Saturday night as Calvin jumped out to an early 8-0 advantage. Aquinas quickly recovered as Brett Pfahler led the Saints back into the game. Pfahler's 17 first half points enabled the Saints to take a one point lead into the halftime locker room.

An early 11-3 run by the Knights at the start of the second half gave Calvin a 43-36 lead with 16:25 to play in the game. Aquinas responded with the next eight points as freshman Vaughn Avecilla and Connor McCane both converted three point attempts. The two teams traded baskets over the next ten minutes of play until the score was tied at 58 with just under four minutes to play. The Saints executed down the stretch and played strong defense to outlast the Knights by six.

Pfahler paced the Saints with 21 points, while Cole Moore chipped in with a dozen. Jake Shockey recorded a game high in rebounds with eleven. Calvin was led by Matt DeBoer who finished with 18 points.

The Saints will host Lourdes (4-4) on Wednesday at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center at 7:30 p.m. The game will be the opener for each in WHAC play.
