12/01/2011 – The men's basketball team defeated conference newcomer, Lourdes, by the count of 86-56 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory improved the Saints record to 4-6 on the season, while the Wolves fell to 4-5 in their inaugural campaign.
The Saints used a second half surge to pass their first conference test of the season. Aquinas was nursing a six point (29-23) lead at the intermission. Coach Hammer and his staff made the necessary adjustments and the Saints lead inflated to 22 by the ten minute mark in the period. Aquinas continued to play sound defense and located the open shooter as the advantage increased. The Saints converted on 21 of 28 (75%) field goal attempts in the second half. Aquinas found themselves on the right side of a 30 point victory and held serve on their home court.
The Saints out rebounded the Wolves 40-23 and out shot Lourdes 55%-41%. Cole Moore led the way for Aquinas with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. The Saints also received strong perimeter play out of Joe Powers and Brett Pfahler, who both contributed 13 points. Jake Shockey chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists for Aquinas. John Washington paced the Wolves attack with 12 points.
The Saints will travel to Lima, Ohio on Saturday when they face off with the Racers of Northwestern Ohio (3-6, 0-1 WHAC).
