12/22/2011 – The men's basketball team was defeated by Columbia College 66-57 in Chicago, Illinois at the St. Xavier Midwest Tournament. The victory improved the Cougars record to 10-4, while the Saints fell to 5-10 on the season.
Columbia College, which is located in Columbia, Missouri, is affiliated with the American Midwest Conference and is a member of NAIA Division One Basketball. The Cougars were receiving votes in the latest DI coaches poll.
The Cougars jumped out early and scored the games first seven points and kept the Saints at arms length the rest of the way. Aquinas trailed by nine at the half and could never quite chip away at Columbia's advantage. Jake Shockey's inspired play kept the Saints close, but it was not enough as Columbia held on for the 66-57 victory. Shockey paced the Saints with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. Tanner Sutton led a balanced attack for Columbia with 12 points.
The Saints will conclude their three day stay in Chicago with a match-up against a familiar face. Aquinas will be pitted against Siena Heights in the 7 p.m. game tonight.
