01/14/2012 – The men's basketball team was defeated by Davenport by the score of 66-61 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center today. The victory improved the Panthers record to 18-2 overall and to 8-0 in the WHAC, while the Saints fell to 9-11 on the season and to 5-3 in league play.
The Saints jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and used a Kevin Grant three pointer at the buzzer to enter the half with a one point advantage (28-27). Coach Hammer's crew was executing the game plan and found themselves with an opportunity to knock off the #4 ranked Panthers.
The Saints used an early second half surge to extend the lead to ten with just over 12 minutes to play in the contest. The Panthers, who were in jeopardy of losing their perfect conference record, found a way over the next six minutes to score 20 straight points to forge ahead by ten with 6:53 to play in the game. The Saints continued to battle, but could not overcome the 20-0 surge. Aquinas was led by the play of Joe Powers and Brett Pfahler, who contributed 18 and 15 points respectively. Lonnie Fairfax paced the Panthers with 21 points.
The Saints will look to regroup on Wednesday as Aquinas will host Madonna (11-9, 5-3 WHAC) at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center at 7:30 p.m.
