02/09/2012 – The women's basketball team avenged an early season loss to Siena Heights by returning the favor at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory improved Aquinas' record to 15-11 overall and to 8-7 in league play, while Siena Heights fell to 16-11 on the season and to 8-7 in the WHAC. The two teams now find themselves tied for fifth in the league standings with three games to play.
Aquinas established early dominance and built a double digit lead midway through the first half. Jenna Brower's four three pointers ignited the Saints offense and crowd. Brower finished the half with 14 points to pace the Saints. The Saints from Siena outscored Aquinas 13-6 down the stretch to trim the lead to 36-30 at the halftime break.
The Saints seemed to be in control leading 62-46 with eight minutes to play in the game, but a 19-5 ambush by Siena Heights brought them within two in the games final minutes. Aquinas was able to withstand the flurry with solid defense and key free throw makes down the stretch.
Marissa Marx led four Saints in double figures with 16 points. Jenna Brower (14), Shelby Carter (12), and Taelor Sanders (11) all provided support in the scoring department, while Chelsea Matley was all over the court accounting for six points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
The Saints will now travel to #6 Concordia (23-4, 13-2 WHAC) on Saturday to battle the Cardinals at 1 p.m.
