02/24/2012 – The women's basketball team went down swinging as they almost pulled a stunner in the opening round of the WHAC Tournament. The highly touted Cardinals from Concordia escaped the upset bug by defeating Aquinas 69-66. The victory improved Concordia's record to 27-4, while the Saints concluded their season with an overall record of 15-15. The Cardinals will now host Madonna in the semi-final round.
Aquinas, who suffered a pair of double-digit losses to Concordia during the regular season, came into the game with nothing to lose. The attitude was infectious as the Saints went toe-to-toe with one of the WHAC's heavy hitters. Taelor Sanders' 17 first half points were key in keeping the score tight. An evenly played first twenty minutes saw the Cardinals hold the slim 39-37 advantage at the half. The game remained tight throughout the second half with neither team finding the knockout punch.
A Clare Conway free throw at the 13:07 mark of the half tied the score at 54. The final 13 minutes of play is what this time of year is all about. David going after Goliath and during March Madness -- it all makes sense. The Saints never regained the lead, but ended their season where it started, with hope and optimism. The 69-66 defeat was a reminder that on any day and in any gym -- "the Madness" can intervene.
Taelor Sanders led the way for the Saints with a game high 26 points, while Anne Marie Shumaker concluded her career with a nine point and five rebound effort.
