03/18/2012 – The baseball team split a four game set with the Crusaders of Madonna over the weekend. The Saints record now stands at 8-10 overall and 2-2 in the league, while Madonna sports a 17-11 record and the same matching 2-2 record in the WHAC.
The Saints starting pitchers were roughed up by the Madonna bats during Saturday's contest. Aquinas used late rallies in both game, but could not come all the way back. The Saints spotted Madonna six runs in the first game and trailed the Crusaders 10-2 going into the final inning in game two. Madonna prevailed 6-5 and 10-7 to notch a pair of wins to start the series contested on their home field. Misiewicz (2-2) and Schafer (1-2) were credited with the losses. Nick Kissane led the Saints offensively by going 4-7 with five RBI's, two runs scored and delivering one home run. Michael Penny also collected four hits for the Saints on Saturday.
The Saints returned the favor on Sunday by winning both contests on the strong arms of Kaleb Ort and Jake Ritsema. Ort (2-1) was credited with the victory in game one as he scattered three hits and allowed one run in six and a third innings of work. The right-hander from Lowell also stuck out twelve Crusaders. Ritsema (2-1) followed suit by allowing one run on five hits and striking out four to earn the complete game victory. The Saints offense supplied just enough power to secure the wins on Sunday (4-1 and 3-1).
Aquinas will return to action on Wednesday as the travel to Whiting, Indiana to battle Calumet St. Joseph (2-15) in a doubleheader.
