03/28/2012 – The women's softball team defeated Spring Arbor in both games of double header at Spring Arbor. The wins bring the Saints' record to 14-9, while dropping Spring Arbor's record to 7-13.
Aquinas came out swinging in the first game scoring four runs in the first on big hits from Stowell, Stratton, and Tubergen. The Cougars did not let up, however, scoring one in the bottom half of the same inning. This slight set back was no obstacle for the Saints who went on to score two more in the fourth and again in the seventh inning with help from a triple by Lindsey Stewart. The win went to junior, Carlie Giarmo. Giarmo allowed only six hits while fanning nine batters.
The second game began with Spring Arbor's bats lighting up. Adams hit a three-run home run in the first to put the Cougars up 3-0. The Saints answered back in the second with a single run scored on an infield hit. The bats came out again in the fourth inning. Aquinas scored three runs on back to back doubles by Lowe and Klinkner to tie the game. The game winner came in the top of the sixth to put the Saints up 5-4. The pitcher, Becca Shineldecker, took control after a shaky start to hold off the Cougars. Shineldecker struck out seven and increased her season record to 5-1.
The Saints will return to action on Thursday as they host the Flying Dutch of Hope (6-10) at Fuller Park at 3:30 p.m.
