09/01/2012 – The men's soccer team suffered a road loss to the #4 team in the country as the Red Storm of Rio Grande defeated the Saints 3-1. The victory improved Rio Grande's record to 2-1 on the season, while Aquinas fell to 1-2-1.
Rio Grande started the scoring in the 16th minute as Orlando Zapata's found the back of the net to give the Red Storm the 1-0 lead. The Saints fought back and tied the score at one as Tyler Fischer scored his first goal of 2012 in the 23rd minute. The score remained tied until the 50th minute when Mike Burney connected on the eventual game winner for the Red Storm. Zapata added an insurance goal late to give Rio Grande the 3-1 victory.
The Red Storm's defense keyed the win as the Saints could only muster six shots (three on goal). In comparison Rio Grande took 15 shots, with eight of them on goal. Jack Marchant recorded two saves to notch the victory, while Mike Sweers was credited with the loss as gave up three goals and saved five shots.
The Saints will return home for a non-league match with Cornerstone (0-0-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
