09/04/2012 – The men's soccer team netted a double overtime victory over Cornerstone in a non-league affair at the Aquinas College Soccer Field. The win improved the Saints record to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 0-1-1 in 2012.
The expected competitive match, which was played under hot and muggy conditions, between two WHAC preseason favorites lived up to the billing. Aquinas controlled the pace and tempo, but the Golden Eagles defense and goal tending kept the Saints off the scoreboard. Aquinas out shot the Golden Eagles 27-8 and 11-4 on goal. The ice was broken in the 107th minute when Heath Somers scored an unassisted goal off a free kick. Somer's ball found a home in the upper back corner of the net to lift the Saints to the win.
Saints goaltender, Mike Sweers, was credited with the shutout victory (4 saves), while Cornerstone's Kyle Breckan recorded ten saves in defeat.
The Saints will return to the turf on Saturday as they travel to Goshen, Indiana to battle the Maple Leafs (1-1) at 7 p.m.
