Saints Outlast IU-South Bend in Five

09/08/2012 – The women's volleyball team was pushed to limit, but the Saints held serve and defeated the Titans three sets to two. The victory evened Aquinas' record at 3-3, while IU-South Bend fell to 2-7 on the season.

The Saturday afternoon affair at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center started well for the Saints as the cruised to the first set win 25-18. The Titans fought right back and led set two in its entirety (25-16) to square the match at one a piece. After exchanging early blows the teams settled in for an exciting best of three tilt to decide today's winner. Over the next three sets the game encountered 27 ties and 15 lead changes. The Saints wrestled a set three win (25-23), while the Titans extended the match to a fifth and final game as they won the fourth set 28-26. The Saints used the Sturrus faithful to carry them home in the deciding set. Aquinas finished off IU-South Bend 16-14 to claim their third victory of the season.

The Saints were led on offense by the duo of MacKenzie Kolstad (13 kills) and Elle Sturgell (11 kills). Aquinas' Nicci Thomas stuffed the stat sheet as she compiled 26 assists, 23 digs and five kills. Freshman Jen VanCuren notched a block and assisted on seven others to anchor Aquinas' front line of defense.

The Saints will return to the court on Wednesday as Aquinas will entertain Cornerstone (3-1) in non-league game starting at 7 p.m.
