10/13/2012 – The women's soccer team was unable to pull off the upset as Cornerstone defeated the host Saints by the count of 2-1. The Golden Eagles improved to 11-3 overall and to 3-1 in league play, while the Saints fell to 5-9 on the season and to 1-4 in the WHAC.
The monsoon like conditions broke as game time approached and the two long time WHAC members settled in for an instant classic. The squads went back and forth during the first half with neither team mounting any formidable attack.
Early in the second half the Saints lit up the scoreboard on Melissa Hogan's eighth goal of the season. Hogan emerged from a scramble in front of the Golden Eagles net to park the ball pass the keeper. The advantage was short lived as Cornerstone responded almost immediately with the equalizer during the 62nd minute of play. Amanda Van Laar scored her seventh of the year off a corner kick.
With the game destined to head to overtime, the Golden Eagles broke up the upset bid with a goal by Kate Wiegman at the 81:46 mark of the contest. Anna Stegink assisted on Wiegman's second goal of the season.
Kathy Butt was awarded the victory in net for Cornerstone as she recorded three saves. Aquinas keeper, Molly O'Conner collected five saves in the defeat.
