10/20/2012 – The women's cross country team placed 5th out of 32 schools at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge hosted by Aquinas College. The competition, which is held at Riverside Park, is the largest all NAIA meet in the country and drew teams from 38 different schools.
The Saints, who were ranked 12th in the latest NAIA poll, were running on their home course and had picture perfect racing conditions to work with. The end result was not exactly picture perfect for the Saints. Aquinas finished in fifth place behind #3 Olivet Nazarene, #9 Cornerstone, #24 Huntington and #17 St. Francis with 181 points. The Saints were :31 faster than last year at this meet and recorded the schools 10th fastest team time, but it was not quite enough to keep pace with the top four schools.
Britta Patterson led the Saints with a 16th place finish in an overall time of 18:36. Alina Dhaseleer, a senior from Charlevoix was second in for the Saints in 22nd place (18:50). Rachael Steil (19:14) and Catie Rietsema (19:18) followed in Dhaseleer in 44th and 48th place respectively. Freshman Carley Woolcott rounded out the scoring for the Saints as she placed 64th in a time of 19:32.
The Saints will look to regroup and prepare for the WHAC Championships in two weeks.
