10/25/2012 – The women's soccer team scored a 1-1 tie with Siena Heights in WHAC soccer action in Adrian, Michigan. Aquinas moved to 6-9-1 on the season and to 2-4-1 in league play, while the Saints from Siena are now 9-4-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in the WHAC. Aquinas currently sits in sixth place in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference standings with one match to play.
In essence the match between the long time WHAC rivals would lead to the fifth seed in the upcoming WHAC tournament. The winning team would hold the fifth spot, while the loser more than likely filling in the sixth hole. So as always the stakes were high between the the two schools that share the same namesake.
The match was controlled by the home team and Siena held every advantage except on the scoreboard. The Saints were out shot by Siena 27-6, while the shots on goal favored Siena 8-1. The lone shot attempt by Aquinas was converted by Mikayla Goldsmith in the 21st minute. Goldsmith, a freshman from Rockford, now has three goals on the season and ranks third on the team in points. Melissa Hogan was credited with the assist on Goldsmith's knuckler from 25 yards out.
The lone Siena goal was scored by Alessia Vagnini during the 52nd minute of play. Vagnini recorded her sixth goal of the season on a free kick from 20 yards out. The two teams spent the next 58 minutes looking for the game winner to no avail. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Aquinas will play their regular season finale at Lawrence Tech (2-12, 0-7 WHAC) on Saturday.
