11/20/2012 – The women's basketball team earned their first league victory of the season as the Saints defeated Indiana Tech at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The win improved Aquinas' record to 4-3 on the season and to 1-1 in the WHAC, while the Warriors fell to 1-5 overall and to 1-1 in league play.
The first twenty minutes belonged to Allison Heberlien. The sophomore from Haslett scored 17 first half points to lead the Saints into the locker room with a three point advantage (38-35). The first act, which saw six ties and four lead changes, was just a prelude for an ultra competitive second half that would eventual end in a Saint victory.
A 13-2 spurt over a five minute stretch early in the second half gave the Saints some much needed breathing room with just over thirteen minutes to play. The Warriors trimmed the lead to two points on three different occasions, but could never fully complete the comeback. The Saints closed the contest by scoring 11 of the final 15 points to secure the 73-64 win.
Heberlein led all scores with 24 points, while Shelby Carter netted a double-double with 16 points and eleven rebounds. Chelsea Matley also saw extended minutes and delivered six points, six assists and four rebounds. Ulyssia Richmond paced the Warriors with 17 points.
The Saints will return to action next Wednesday as they to Ann Arbor to battle the #7 ranked Cardinals of Concordia (4-3, 2-0 WHAC) at 5:30 p.m.
