12/01/2012 – The women's basketball team controlled today's contest versus UM-Dearborn en route to a 74-50 victory in front of their home crowd. The win improved the Saints record to 5-4 overall and to 2-2 in league play, while the Wolves fell to 2-5 on the season and to 2-2 in the WHAC.
The Saints, who were looking to score some home cooking at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center, wasted little time flexing their muscle out of the gates. Aquinas built a 28-6 lead over the first ten minutes play as Shelby Carter dominated the paint during the run. Carter, a senior from Byron Center, scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds during the games first twenty minutes. The Saints advantage was 16 (43-27) at the half and Coach Nash's crew looked to keep the pressure on UM Dearborn for the remainder of the contest.
However, the Wolves would not roll over as they sliced the lead to single digits on a two point make by Jalissa Williams with 10:33 to play. The Saints response - a 22-7 run to close the game. Aquinas would prevail 74-50, spreading a little pre-holiday cheer to the AQ faithful.
Carter closed the game with 17 points, while Allison Heberlein netted 16 points and corralled six rebounds. Clare Conway also struck for double figures as she contributed a dozen points to the Saints cause. Aquinas controlled the board war (46-30) and out shot the Wolves from the field 43%-34%.
The Saints will now travel to Bowling Green, Ohio on Tuesday to battle Lourdes (3-6, 1-3 WHAC). The game will take place at the University of Bowling Green at 6 p.m.
