01/09/2013 – The women's basketball team halted a three game losing streak by defeating Lawrence Tech 65-53 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory improved the Saints record to 9-7 overall and to 5-5 in league play, while the Blue Devils fell to 5-9 on the season and to 3-7 in the WHAC. The Saints are currently tied for sixth place in the WHAC standings.
The Saints, who were entertaining the WHAC's newest addition for the first time, used a 20-4 spurt over a ten minute stretch in the first half to gain early control of the contest. The Blue Devils struggled with the Saints defense as the visitors committed 19 first half turnovers. Aquinas converted the miscues into offense and led the Blue Devils 28-15 at the break.
The Blue Devils halftime adjustments paid early dividends in half number two. Coach Pinkowski's crew scored the first nine points of the second half. The rally continued with Lawrence Tech outscoring Aquinas 22-6 over the first eight minutes of the second half to take a 37-34 lead. The Saints who were in desperate need of baskets and stops found both over the next several minutes.
Coach Nash and the Saints would score 16 of the games next 19 points to put the game on ice. Despite shooting 33% from the field the Saints evened their mark in the WHAC as they approached the halfway mark of conference play.
Chelsea Matley led all scorers with 15 points, while Clare Conway and Allison Heberlein chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively. Allison Bicknell paced the Blue Devils with 13 points.
The Saints will now switch their attention to Madonna (10-7, 6-4 WHAC) who will host Aquinas on Saturday at 1 p.m.
