01/09/2013 – For the second time this season the men's basketball team has held an opponent to a school record low of 29 points. The Saints defeated Coach Kempf's Blue Devils in his return to Aquinas College. The Saints improved to 8-10 overall and to 6-4 in the WHAC, while Lawrence Tech fell to 2-16 on the season and to 1-9 in league play. Aquinas currently finds themselves tied for sixth in the league standings, but are now within two games of Madonna, who sits atop of the "wild and wooly" WHAC.
The Saints, who were coming off a pair of victories over ranked opponents, avoided the upset in your classic "trap game". The added storyline of a former assistant bringing his new team into the Sturrus did not seem to hinder the Saints who remained perfect in 2013. Aquinas has now won seven of their last nine and seemed poised to continue to ascend in the league standings.
Aquinas limited the Blue Devils to 24% shooting in the first half, while the Saints converted 42% of their first half field goals. The difference led to a 24-15 advantage at the break for the home team. The Saints defense continued to stymie the Blue Devils. Aquinas used a 17-5 surge out of the locker room to give the Saints some breathing room. Aquinas, whose lead was now elevated to 21 (41-20) with 13 minutes to play, continued to keep the Blue Devils offense in check. The final buzzer sounded with the Saints securing their eighth win of the season by the count of 54-29.
Zach Eddy and Austin Semple paced the Saints with 12 points a piece. The pair combined for 11-16 shooting from the field and eleven rebounds. Jon Osantowski led the Blue Devils with seven points.
Aquinas will now travel to Madonna (13-5, 8-2 WHAC) on Saturday to square off with the Crusaders in a key WHAC match-up.
