01/20/2013 – The women's basketball team suffered a tough road loss to the Wolves of UM Dearborn. The victory improved Dearborn's record to 6-13 on the season and to 5-8 in the WHAC, while the Saints fell to 5-8 in league play and to 9-10 overall. Aquinas is currently in a three-way (with UM-Dearborn and Northwestern Ohio) tie for seventh place in the WHAC standings.
The Saints, who won the previous meeting 74-50, were looking for the season sweep of UM-Dearborn. The Wolves, who have been playing better of late, had other plans. The game see-sawed back and forth for much of the first half before a late 12-5 run allowed the Wolves to take a 29-21 advantage at the break.
UM Dearborn pushed the lead to as many as twelve in the second half just to see the Saints climb right back into the contest. Aquinas drew within a single point three times before Allison Heberlein's triple gave the Saints a 51-49 advantage with just over four minutes to play. The two teams traded points over the next several minutes and the game saw its second tie (54-54) with two minutes to play. UM Dearborn's best friend down the stretch was the charity stripe as the Wolves converted its final six attempts. Dearborn ended the game on a 8-3 run to close the door on the Saints.
Aquinas' efforts were led by Chelsea Matley and Allison Heberlein. The pair struck for 16 points a piece in the setback. Matley also added nine rebounds and five steals to her stat line. Danielle Cowart paced three Wolves in double figures with 18 points.
The Saints will return home on Wednesday to face #8 Concordia (16-4, 13-1 WHAC) at 6 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
