01/30/2013 – The men's basketball team was defeated by Lourdes University in a game played at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The victory improved the Wolves record to 16-7 overall and to 11-5 in league play, while the Saints fell to 8-8 in the WHAC and to 10-14 on the season. Aquinas currently sits in eighth place in the league standings with six games to play.
In a game when defense was supposed to reign supreme, it was the first half offenses that stole the show. Lourdes connected on 63% of their field goal attempts, while the Saints converted on 13-20 for a 65% clip. The Saints scored seven of the final nine points of the half to take a 34-28 lead into the locker room.
The Saints, who were looking to avenge an early season loss to the Wolves, extended the lead to nine points on an old fashioned three point play by Zach Eddy with 18:28 to play. The Wolves defense began to assert themselves and enabled Lourdes to inch closer. A 16-8 run over an eight minute stretch trimmed the Saints lead to one. A pair of free throws from Eddy and a basket by Connor McCane pushed the lead back to five at 49-44.
The next eight minutes proved pivotal as Lourdes went on a 12-0 run to take a seven point advantage. Zach Eddy finally broke the drought with 1:24 to play, but the damaged had been done and the Wolves would prevail 58-53. The Saints were led by Brett Pfahler's 16 points, while Zach Eddy chipped in with 15. Ken Smith paced three Wolves in double figures with a dozen points.
The Saints will return to the floor on Thursday as they travel to Detroit to battle Marygrove (3-21, 3-13 WHAC).
